Klezfest at Jewish Music Institute

14 Aug 2016

The world-famous music school is open for four days AUG 15 - 19 of Klezmer music: performing, singing, dancing and learning.

Jewish Music Institute is a world-renowned institution, headed by Sophie Solomon (prev. of Oi Va Voi) and the self-proclaimed home of Jewish music in the UK. It certainly lives up to its heading 'where Jewish music lives' with this annual summer school and accompanying events.

Those attending can expect:

  • Traditional klezmer; history, melodies, ornamentation, dance and accompaniment
  • Play music in ensembles and delve into improvisational techniques
  • Interpret scores, jam and perform to the public
  • Lectures from the cutting edge of academic research

The international faculty will feature some of the very best klezmer musicians from around the world, such as Ilana Cravitz (Violin – UK), Alan Bern (Accordion – USA/DE), Frank London (Trumpet – USA), Susi Evans (Clarinet – UK), Guy Schalom (Percussion – UK) and Francesca Ter-berg (Cello – UK). Wider public will also be able to enjoy the performance of Klezfest faculty on Wednesday, August 17th.

In a conversation with the UK's Jewish Chronicle, Gil Karpas, the JMI's events manager, reflected on the diversity of their audience, ranging

"from Jewish 18-year-olds fuelled by a thirst for knowledge of their origins, to octogenarians wanting to connect with the culture of their home lives."
