An editorial 'hello'
JEU MAG was created out of the need for a European Jewish home - online.
An initiative of alumni of Paideia - The European Institute for Jewish Studies in Sweden, this (currently) small project has a big goal: to offer a platform for the Jewish life and thought, as it exists today, in all of its plurality, complexity, and an increasingly international character.
One of JEU's Advisory board members, Alisa, aptly put it:
When I try to explain the plurality and complexity of Jewish world to my students I often use a metaphor of a tree with intertwined branches and wide trunk rooted somewhere on mount Sinai. However it turns out to be very difficult to prove the point that Judaism is much more than a local synagogue and that the epithet ‘Jewish’ can be attributed to such variety − the likes of which many of my students have never experienced in their lives. I ask myself: “How can I prove the diversity of Jewish culture if I can’t take all of my students abroad? Is it possible to experience it without a personal encounter?” We need a platform that will unite Jews from all over the Europe and create a unique information platform, showcasing the richness and diversity of Jewish culture that is happening right here and right now. JEU − European Jewish Magazine will be a great solution for me and my students, and we look forward to get access to the intellectual treasures of the European Jewry. - Alisa Zilberstein
Whether you want to check holiday dates, upcoming cultural events, reflect on current affairs, engage in a conversation on Jewish identity/ies, or, in true Paideia fashion, study a bit - JEU's your place.
We hope you'll join us in shaping it, together.
